This home had along and unattractive run of steps leading up to the front door. This was remedied by partially concealing the view of the lower steps with wood screening. The screening wrapped the lower step landing on 2 sides and created a small courtyard entry experience. The wood used matched the wood on the house and helped tie the house into the landscape, linear rows of grasses were used for planting to compliment the linear clean lines of the contemporary architecture. The garbage bin and adjacent black planter with Japanese maple was designed to carefully tie gracefully into the architecture so the garbage bin doesn’t look imposing and unsightly. The Japanese maple in the raised metal planter helps balance out the height of the steps and upper entry landing. The back yard was also designed to have a clean minimal contemporary look that ties into and accentuates the architecture, with a slightly zen feel. The charcoal stained horizontal fence surrounding the rear yard with the corner L shaped acrylic screen with Japanese maple provides a striking back drop for a small yard. Tall Linear columnar beech with their thin footprint provides ideal privacy without compromising space and offers a green backdrop. The steps off the upper terrace meet a wood catwalk on river rock at ground level which mimics a bridge over a dry river bed. Like a bridge over a dry river bed often seen in Japanese gardens this enhances the “zen” experience desired, glass screening in black metal posts was added at the sides of the top terrace landing to provide privacy and tie into the existing glass railings. The small green putting area on the ground allows for recreation and a place for child play adjacent the stone siting area., providing a multi- functional garden on a small space, A ground level storage cupboard was designed to fit adjacent the high wall that retains the upper terrace to help conceal height of the wall , provide storage as well as tie into he look of the attractive fencing and foster unity on all 4 sides.
